The natural active ingredients in our food supplements

Bioactives of high micronutritional value

Fermented Turmeric

It is our star ingredient, present in several products from our range. Turmeric comes from the rhizome of the Curcuma longa plant, a herbaceous plant in the ginger family. In Asia, it is dried and powdered for use as a spice or dietary supplement.
We are using Fermented Curcuma Longa Powder and Extract 95% curcuminoids.
As several studies have observed, fermentation increases both the biological qualities and the bioavailability of curcumin.

The turmeric used by Phytomisan is fermented using the kombucha method. This process releases a greater quantity of polyphenols and other antioxidant active ingredients present in curcuminoids. It also ensures their better assimilation by your body.

Curcumin from curcuma longa has many virtues. EFSA authorizes the mention of the following health properties:

  • Has antioxidant properties;
  • Helps maintain healthy joints and bones;
  • Supports nervous system function and good mental balance;
  • Supports heart function;
  • Helps maintain the effectiveness of the immune system;
  • Helps maintain healthy lungs and upper respiratory tract;
  • Helps maintain normal liver function and aids digestion.

Nigella Sativa or black cumin

Nigella comes from the Nigella sativa plant, an aromatic plant of the anemone, buttercup or clematis family. With a peppery aroma, nigella seeds enhance many oriental dishes. In India and the Middle East, they have also been used for centuries for medicinal purposes.

PHYTOMISAN uses oil extracted from black cumin seeds, which is very rich in bioactives. In addition to essential fatty acids such as linoleic, linolenic and oleic acid, black cumin oil contains:

  • Thymoquinone
  • Phytosterols
  • Alkaloids and saponins
  • Flavonoids

Science is currently evaluating the properties of black seed oil against infections, oxidative stress, inflammation, arthritic pain and certain chronic diseases such as diabetes.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) authorises this claim:

  • Helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Olive (Olea Europea)

You are familiar with this oleaginous berry, whose oil you may appreciate in cooking. But its leaves are also of great interest in phytotherapy.

At PHYTOMISAN, we use both olive oil and olive leaves in powder form. Their most valuable bioactives are:

  • Polyphenols, abundant in olive oil and olive leaves.
  • Oleuropein: This is the main phenolic component of olive leaves.
  • Hydroxytyrosol: A powerful antioxidant polyphenol, present in large quantities in olive oil.
  • Triterpenic acids and phytosterols
  • Flavonoids: they are present in olive leaves, in the form of luteolin and rutin.

Science studies their interest against:

  • Cardiovascular risk: the action of oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol is evaluated against blood pressure.
  • Oxidative stress and the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer.
  • Chronic inflammation and inflammatory diseases.
  • Bacterial and fungal pathogens.

European health authorities authorise the following claims to be made:

  • Polyphenols in olive oil contribute to the protection of blood lipids against oxidative stress.

And EFSA assesses their favourable effects:

  • Against oxidative stress of cells and blood lipids
  • Maintaining blood sugar levels
  • For blood circulation and blood pressure
    To the elimination functions of the body

The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia or Nopal)

Opuntia – also called nopal, prickly pear or ficus-indica – is a plant commonly consumed as a green vegetable, in Mexico and other regions such as Latin America, South Africa and the Mediterranean. Where for centuries it has also been part of the traditional pharmacopoeia.

Because opuntia is full of interesting compounds such as:

  • polyphenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids, present in all parts of the plant.
  • Fatty acids such as linoleic acid (omega-6) and linolenic acid (omega-3)
  • Vitamins such as vitamin E (especially α-tocopherol), vitamin C and vitamin K1.
  • Sterols such as β-sitosterol and campesterol.
    Essential amino acids like glutamine, leucine, lysine and valine.

Several studies suggest that these bioactives act on the intestinal microbiota, with a "significantly positive" influence on the metabolism of overweight people. Other researchers hypothesize that by binding to dietary fats, opuntia fiber would increase their excretion and thus reduce the amount of fats available for absorption in the body.

Glucosamine and chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are substances that are naturally present in your cartilage, tendons, bones and skin. They are an integral part of their composition.

In your body, glucosamine helps produce glycosaminoglycans, essential components of cartilage. It also helps build and repair your cartilage tissue.

As for chondroitin, it maintains your cartilage structure by retaining water and inhibiting enzymes that break down cartilage. Which makes it essential for its strength and shock absorption capacity.

PHYTOMISAN uses glucosamine and chondroitin of marine origin, as they are extracted from the shell of crustaceans. In its formula FARAN dedicated to joint comfort, it combines them with Omega 3 fatty acids of marine origin (EPA and DHA from fish oil).

Numerous scientific studies have evaluated the effects of glucosamine and chondroitin on joint sensitivity and discomfort.

As to date, European health authorities have not validated the potential benefits of Glucosamine and Chondroitin, we invite you to do your own research using scientific reference sources.

Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace mineral, involved in various biological processes in your body. You can find it in meats, eggs, bread, fish, nuts and dairy products, in varying concentrations.
Two studies conducted in 2023 looked at the anti-aging action of selenium. In particular, they evaluated:

  • Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect
  • Its role in regulating thyroid hormones
  • And its importance for overall health

As for the European health authorities, they validate the health claims according to which selenium contributes to:

  • To protect cells against oxidative stress
  • To the normal functioning of the immune system
  • To normal thyroid function
  • To normal spermatogenesis
  • Maintaining normal hair
  • Maintaining normal nails

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum, shiny ganoderma or Lingzhi)

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a mushroom that grows in forests in Asia (especially China, Japan and Korea), Europe, North America
