By Dr Shahid Nasim

Breast cancer is the most common and most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. One in 8 women is currently affected by this cancer in France and this figure could double within twenty years despite advances in technology and early detection. Breast cancer develops in three quarters of cases in women over 50 and in 95% from the epithelial cells of the mammary gland: we then speak of adenocarcinoma.

During the AGM on April 1st in Le Mans, we had the pleasure and honor of welcoming Dr Shahid Nasim, oncologist, who gave us a conference on breast cancer. I thank Dr Nasim for his conference and for his article announced by Émilie Barrère, in his summary included in the report of the AG, published in the magazine Sources Vitales n°103 of June. Roger Cattell.

breast anatomy

The breasts, symbols of seduction and femininity par excellence, are a very sensitive and very fragile part of the body. Breasts begin to develop in the uterus, a few weeks after the embryo forms. In the sixth month of pregnancy, some cells develop into the baby's nipples. In girls, breasts are most often formed between the ages of 8 and 11, but even when they are fully developed, they cannot produce milk at this age. During pregnancy, breasts increase in size and become twice as heavy.

They weigh on average between 150 and 400 g but can sometimes reach 1 kg. At menopause, breast volume decreases. The inside of the breast is made up of blood vessels, nerves, glands, fat cells, and milk ducts that serve to transport milk to the nipple. Breast tissues are influenced by hormones (estrogen and progesterone) produced by women in varying quantities throughout their lives (puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc.).

Risk factors

To date, many elements of our daily lives have been suspected of increasing the risk of one day developing breast cancer. The main ones are:

– the presence of certain genes with a mutation of the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes; Breast cancer is the most common and most diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. One in eight women is currently affected by this cancer in France and this figure could double within twenty years despite advances in technology and early detection. Breast cancer develops in three quarters of cases in women over 8 and 50% from the epithelial cells of the mammary gland: this is called adenocarcinoma.

– the precocity of the first menses before the age of 12, a late first pregnancy after the age of 35 and the absence of pregnancy are important risk factors;

– alcohol, smoking and excessive consumption of calories (fats, desserts, fatty and bloody meats), increase the danger, as does the absence of physical activity;

– hormone replacement therapy (estrogen and progesterone) slightly increases the risk after 5 years of treatment, as do oral contraceptives if they are taken for several years.

Symptoms and complications

The first commonly observed symptom of breast cancer is a lump in one breast. Generally painless, this mass may be accompanied by hard nodes in the armpit (axillary nodes) corresponding to a spread of cancer, but the nodes remain painless. Other symptoms are: a discharge from the nipple, breast pain, a nipple that closes inwards and the skin of the breast that thickens, hardens or reddens. When a tumor appears in the milk ducts, the size and shape of the breast may change.

Also, the nipple may pull inward or the skin may retract causing a dimple to form. Metastases occur when certain cells of a tumor break off and travel to other parts of the body, passing through blood or lymph vessels. The tissues affected are often the lymph nodes, lungs, liver, bones, brain and skin. By the time the metastases are discovered, the cancer has probably already spread to other places, even if these tumors are not detected.

Medical diagnosis

A preliminary clinical diagnosis must be made by palpation of the breast by your doctor. To confirm and refine his diagnosis, he can then prescribe a bilateral mammogram, then a biological analysis of the tumour. The X-ray of both breasts shows the appearance of the mass, the biopsy confirms the presence of cancerous cells and if necessary, an ultrasound can specify, for example, if the lump is a cyst composed of liquid or rather a solid tumor. Early detection of breast cancer reduces the likelihood of the cancer spreading and increases the chances of a complete cure.

Medical treatments

The classic treatment combines surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

– Mastectomy consists of the total removal of the mammary gland, while sparing the pectoral muscles. Lumpectomy, a less invasive surgery, involves removing the tumor while preserving the mammary gland as much as possible. It concerns 75% of cases. The sentinel lymph node technique now makes it possible to avoid having to remove all the lymph nodes in the area if they are not affected. In the case of tumors of less than 2 cm, the surgeon removes it at the same time as the tumor.

– Radiotherapy is also almost always part of the care protocol for breast cancer, especially after conservative surgery. The objective is to destroy, thanks to targeted irradiation, any cancerous cells that may persist in the breast. Side effects are redness of the skin and feeling tired.

- Chemotherapy given by injections, reduces the growth of cancer cells, but its common side effects include nausea, vomiting, hair loss and infections.

– Finally, hormone therapy also helps stop the growth of cancer cells and can be used for up to 5 years for women. Hot flashes and irregular periods are among the common side effects of hormone therapy. Biological therapy reduces the growth of cancer cells and helps the body to destroy these cells, targeted therapies generally complete the care protocol for patients with breast cancer.

Preventive hygiene

Physical activity reduces the risk of one day developing cancer and also reduces the risk of recurrence after breast cancer. It is estimated that the practice of 3 hours of physical activity per week reduces these risks by 20%. Patients who have been treated for breast cancer often feel very tired, even several months after the end of treatment. However, unlike “classic” fatigue, physical activity helps them regain energy.

When the patient has had to undergo an axillary treatment (the nodes closest to the tumor have been removed), she is at risk of developing lymphedema (swelling of the arm). This painful, disabling and unsightly phenomenon is reduced by physical activity. Given the risks associated with the use of any drug, the decision to use preventive treatment should be made only after a thorough examination of the risks and benefits of the treatment in question.

You can take other steps to reduce the risk of breast cancer, including having, a healthy diet low in fat and with lots of fruits and vegetables, practicing regular muscle activity, refusing to smoke, reducing alcohol consumption (no more than one drink per day) and finally taking into account the risk associated with hormone therapy (especially if it lasts more than 5 years ).

Between the ages of 40 and 49, women should talk to their doctor about the risks of breast cancer and the screening options available to them. These measurements can help detect any unusual lumps or abnormalities in the breast tissue, as early detection is critical to successful treatment.

Products promoting prevention

Our immune system generally tries to fight off abnormal cancer cells, but since this response is sometimes insufficient to stop the growth of the tumor, 12 superfoods can help neutralize this danger.

1. Mushrooms. Recent studies have shown that their consumption can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in pre-menopausal women, because they contain an antioxidant called ergotinine which is believed to have anti-cancer properties.

2. garlic contains highly active fat- and water-soluble sulfur compounds.

3. Broccoli sprouts. Broccoli helps prevent cancer because its sprouts resemble those of soy, but are finer and very rich in anti-cancer compounds such as glucoraphanin. Many experts consider these sprouts to be an excellent source of detoxifying enzymes that protect cells against cancer.

4. Pomegranate seeds. Pomegranate provides large amounts of vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, iron, copper, zinc and a large number of group B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9). Its properties also fight against high blood pressure and coronary disorders. We have known for some time that pomegranate seeds are high in anti-cancer antioxidants.

These crunchy little seeds are rich in ellagic tannins, a particularly effective antioxidant that may prevent the development of breast cancer. Additionally, arils (fleshy coverings around a seed) may also improve heart health. But remember that pomegranate has a high content of natural sugars, so limit yourself to half a fruit or a glass of juice per day.

5. Lentils. Recent studies link lentils and other vegetables (eg beans) to drastically reducing the risk of developing breast cancer in women. Lentils, just like other legumes, are high in folacin, fiber, and nutrients that keep our bodies functioning efficiently.

6. Nuts. They are rich in several health-promoting compounds, including Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and plant sterols, which can prevent or slow the development of cancer cells.

7. Salmon. Wild salmon is considered a superfood due to its high content of Omega-3 fatty acids, which can drastically reduce the risk of heart disease, according to the American Heart Association. But did you know that salmon also contains high amounts of vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin,” which helps reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in women by around 25%?

8. Rye bread. Many health experts warn us against eating too many carbohydrates like breads and cereals. But rye bread combines fiber, vitamins, minerals and a phytonutrient called phytic acid, a healthy and cancer-fighting compound. The key is to opt for rye bread made with rye flour and not wheat flour.

9. Turmeric. In Asia, turmeric has been used for many centuries for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-infectious properties. Turmeric slows the development of several types of cancer. Combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, turmeric promotes cell destruction and reduces the formation of metastases as well as the toxicity of treatments (in particular the skin damage caused by radiotherapy during breast cancer).

10. Selenium. This precious trace element acts to prevent cancer and reduce the side effects of treatments (radiotherapy and chemotherapy). It has an antioxidant effect, which strengthens the immune system and blocks oxygen free radicals. This enzyme works in concert with vitamins C and E to protect cell membranes against oxidation which leads to premature aging. Selenium is found in organ meats, egg yolk, shellfish, seafood, oilseeds (Brazil nuts, hazelnuts), brewer's yeast and cereals.

11. Green tea. Green tea contains a powerful nutrient known as epigallocatechin or EGCG. In short, this element of nutrition is the main polyphenol (a family of organic molecules from the plant kingdom) found in green tea. This polyphenol present at more than 50% in green tea is a powerful antioxidant. A study published in April 2010 on cancer prevention confirmed that EGCG could inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

12. Nigella oil or black cumin. This oil, of exceptional richness, contains glucosides, phenolic components, carotene, minerals (phosphorus and iron), enzymes and polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (linoleic acid). Its composition helps strengthen the immune system, fight digestive problems, reduce the oxidation of cell membranes and inhibit the formation of inflammatory molecules. It is a health treasure.

Unity is strength

Three years ago I created my product called Curcumisan Plus including fermented turmeric, pomegranate, olive and black cumin. After several years of trials on my patients, I added lemon (rich in vitamin C) on the recommendation of Roger Castell, president of ABE France, who had measured my product using bioelectronics. The results specified that this natural product, “very vitalizing, antioxidant and very mineralizing”, restores the soil since it acts on the three parameters of Vincent Bioelectronics (pH, rH2 and resistivity).

As it has an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-infectious action, I strongly advise you to take Curcumisan Plus, as a preventative to avoid all serious illnesses. According to Dr. R. Béliveau in his book The Anticancer Method, turmeric is the best example among anti-cancer products.

Ladies, protect your breasts

Cancer is a formidable enemy, which must be fought using all available resources, whether preventive or curative. Although the disease affects approximately one in three people worldwide and in Western countries, I hope that cancer will soon be classified as a disease of the past. Already, knowledge about cancer is very extensive and we understand better and better the appearance and evolution of cancer. We now know that this disease, rather energetic and non-genetic, is linked to an enzymatic disruption.

All humans (women and men) should therefore feel concerned and ask themselves the question “What should I do to preserve my long-term health?” ". Because health depends above all on our nutrition which weighs heavily in the balance of the risk of being affected by this malignant condition. To protect themselves, women (and men) should first halve their food calorie intake (desserts, fatty meats, alcoholic drinks), and replace them with seasonal fruits and vegetables.

This is how, ladies, you will effectively protect the beauty and health of your breasts.
